Left: Original art for The Frankenstein Monster #17 (July 1975) pencilled by Val Mayerik, inked by Bob McLeod and lettered by Artie Simek (scanned from the original in my personal collection, acquired in May 2007). Right: the same page as it appeared in print (colours by Don Warfield).

Bob McLeod (*1951) graduated from Auburn University and the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and has worked in comics both as penciller and inker. Arthur "Artie" Simek (1916 - 1975) was one of Marvel's two primary letterers (the other being Sam Rosen), who also drew the word balloons and sound effects. This page must have been amongst his final work, as Simek passed away in February 1975 (illustrating to a certain degree the lengthy timespan between actual production of a page, its publication, and its publication date (which is three months ahead, i.e. The Frankenstein Monster #17 has a publication date of July 1975 but was on sale in April 1975).

In the above page, Val Mayerik roughed in approximate size text balloons in every panel with blue pencil, and he also left a note to the colourist on the right hand margin reading "LEAVE WHITE". Inker McLeod (or letterer Artie Simek) spelled this out as "COLORIST: LEAVE OPEN AREA IN TOP OF FIRST PANEL WHITE". The bottom margin of the page also carries the pencil caption "FRANK GOES INTO ALPS" in Mayerik's handwriting, indicating a page for page breakdown of the storyline.

Original art bought through legal channels becomes the property of the buyer. This does not, however, include the copyright, which remains with Marvel (as marked, in this case, on the back of the board).
