THE ORIGINAL COMIC BOOK IN A PLASTIC BAG

A 1970s OVERVIEW

In 1962 National Periodical (DC Comics) introduced a new marketing scheme to boost sales by gaining access to the potentially lucrative but previously untapped supermarket and chain store market. The idea was to package a set number of different comic books (initially four, later predominantly three) in a clear plastic bag and was squarely aimed at the casual buyer who most likely would purchase a "comic pack" not for himself but for a child relative.

The comic packs scheme was highly successful and can be seen as one of the first steps towards entering a direct market - there's more on the topic in general here.

This page reflects work in progress on collecting and analyzing information regarding DC Comics packaged comic packs of the 1970s, i.e. the Super Pac (1970-1974), DC Super Heroes (1975) Dynamite Comics (1977) and Dynamic Comics (1978-1981) - information on the individual titles contained in the Comicpacs which DC released in the 1960s is so anecdotal that, at least for the time being, the 1960s period is deliberately left aside.

In the overview lists below, the colour codes are as follows:
ORANGE = unverified / doubtful / incomplete information
SILVER = as per third party informations (e.g. taken from auction listings)
GREEN = verified (first hand; some of these listings contain a link to a detailed review of the specific pack in question)
GREEN = verified (personal communication)

1970

Currently there is not a sufficient amount of information on DC's comic packs of 1970, also leaving open the question when exactly DC rebranded the Comicpac as Super Pac.

1971
